Changes to QTS Skills Tests

February 18, 2018

The Department for Education has recently announced changes to the skills tests.  As of the 14th February 2018:

  • Candidates will be able to take unlimited tests
  • The two year lock out period will be removed, allowing those previously locked out to re-sit the tests
  • Candidates sitting a test will be entitled to up to three attempts at the numeracy test and three attempts at the literacy test free of charge
  • Candidates that took a test on or after the 24th October 2017 which was their second or third attempt at the test and incurred a charge will be able to claim a refund for the cost of their test.

Train to Teach events

Somerset SCITT will be at the following Train to Teach event:

  • Bristol – Mercure Bristol Grand, Wednesday 28th February 2018 between 4.30 – 8pm

Train to Teach events operate on a drop-in basis so you can arrive and leave at any time.  However, it is recommended that you allow at least two hours to make the most of your visit and the wealth of information available.

PGCE courses in Primary Teaching and Early Years

SCITT offers two PGCE courses that lead to Qualified Teacher Status, in Early Years (working with children aged 3–7) or Primary Teaching (5–11). Our training is rated Outstanding in all areas by Ofsted and our trainees value the support from tutors and practical experience in the classroom.  Find out more

Foundation Degrees in Teaching & Learning and Learning and Development in Early Years to Adolescence (0-19)

If you don't have a degree, you can start your journey with our Foundation Degree.  Perhaps you are working as a teaching assistant or in an early years setting and would like to validate your knowledge. The Foundation Degree in Teaching and Learning is an ideal course for you. If you are over 21, you don't need any specific qualifications to apply.

Funding Options and Requirements

All students studying a Foundation Degree, BAPP or PGCE with Somerset SCITT are eligible to apply for various funding options, including student loans and grants through Student Finance England.

Somerset SCITT courses have the following entry requirements:

Foundation Degree- Under 21, 4 x GCSE (A-C), 1 X A Level or Equivalent (A-C) Over 21 - Non standard entry route

BA PP - Foundation Degree (240 Credits)

PGCE - Full Degree, GCSE English, Maths and Science (A-C) QTS Skills Tests Literacy and Numeracy

School Direct - Full degree, GCSE English, Maths and Science (A-C) QTS Skills Tests Literacy and Numeracy
